An article from “New York Times”, urging owners not to let their beloved pets lick their faces, made many enemies. This inscription, although considered controversial, has raised awareness of how often the owners are going to get sick from their pets.
In October 2016, Dr. Neilanjan Nandi, assistant professor of medicine at Drexel University told the “New York Times” that owners should avoid the mouth to mouth contact with their pets. As the mouth of the dogs is a breeding ground for fungi, viruses and bacteria.
What happens to the fact that the saliva of dogs have “medicinal properties” which aid in healing wounds?
According to Nandi, it is still true, but saliva is designed to treat only canine wounds. And there are organisms in the mouth of the dogs that the human body simply can not tolerate.
There are a number of diseases that can be transmitted from dogs to humans. Some of the most common are gastrointestinal problems caused by parasites, bacteria or viruses.
“Because dogs often lick around the anus, they can collect eggs from a parasite with their saliva. So should we allow dogs to lick the face of your child? The answer is short … no!” – states Dr. Mary Beth Lininger, Vice President of Veterinary Relations of Hartville Pet Insurance Group.
“In my experience I have seen many skin and respiratory allergies, body fungi as dermatophytosis, and transmission of Lyme disease from ticks who jump from animals to humans” – said Dr. Joseph Musk, chief medical director.
Dogs are not the only ones from which you can get sick, you should be careful with cats too. While they do not eat feces, they can still have it on their claws and problems occur if you get scratched.
This disease is spread through the cat’s scratch. It’s the most growth in the southern US states, as well as households with children aged between 5 and 9. The disease is a bacterial infection that spreads if the cat is allowed to lick open wounds, or through a new scratch or bite.
According to the center for control and prevention of diseases, this disease is transmitted to cats through infected fleas. So the best way to prevent this, is to give your cat regular treatment against fleas and try to keep her inside.
